Youth Day Commemoration – Annual Mayoral Youth Games 16 June 2025

MIDVAAL COMMEMORATES YOUTH DAY BY HOSTING THE 2025 ANNUAL MAYORAL YOUTH GAMES

Midvaal Local Municipality hosted the annual Mayoral Youth Games to commemorate Youth Day on 16 June 2025 at the Sicelo Sports Ground.

The Mayoral Youth Games are an initiative of the Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, aimed at nurturing and celebrating young sports talent within Midvaal.

Now in its fourth edition, the Mayoral Youth Games brought teams head-to-head in a spirited battle for the ultimate title and community recognition.

The day featured sporting codes such as soccer and netball, and a surprise curtain-raiser match featuring South African soccer legends.

ANNUAL WALK WITH THE MAYOR EVENT - 2025

On Saturday, 31 May 2025, the Midvaal Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, hosted the annual Walk with the Mayor at the Oval Park in Henley on Klip.

The annual “Let’s Walk with the Mayor 5-kilometre fun walk/run” event is one of Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira’s initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of healthy living and community engagement in Midvaal.

The Municipality hosts such events to bring communities together to interact and enjoy the outdoors.

Over 500 participants took part in the event.

The Midvaal Local Municipality’s Inaugural Digital Expo, a three-day showcase of how Digital Technologies can transform public service delivery. As part of this event, we are hosting a two-day Hackathon dedicated to unemployed graduates in software development, digital design, and related fields from Midvaal and the broader Gauteng region.

Second Annual Youth Summit 2024

Midvaal Local Municipality hosted the second annual Youth Summit at the Midvaal Christian Centre.
The event was a massive success, with at least 1,000 young people in attendance.
The Summit once again brought together a range of stakeholders from government departments, private businesses, NGOs, rehabilitation centers, and youth support agencies to provide immediate assistance and guidance to young people.
The stakeholders offered valuable support, including career and study guidance, connecting young people to support opportunities, upgrading their CVs, and helping them build a brighter future.

In partnership with Gauteng COGTA and Gauteng Community Safety, we hosted a Summer Safety Awareness Campaign at the Meyerton Clinic, to help keep our community safe and educated this season!
????‍???? Midvaal Fire Department shared tips on:
????Heat Safety: Recognizing heat exhaustion and staying hydrated.
????Water Safety: Swimming tips and drowning prevention.
????Fire Safety: Preparing for wildfires, burn bans, and firework safety.
????Emergency Preparedness: Responding to severe weather and learning CPR.
????️ Community Safety Teams brought awareness to GBV Prevention: Building a safer, more compassionate community.

Roseline Mapuranga, a rising star in hydroponic farming, proudly hosted a delegation from Michigan State University (MSU) at her thriving farm in Homelands, Midvaal. This visit marks an important milestone for Mapuranga, this visit is a follow up after the prestigious fellowship at Michigan State University that she attended in September 2023, furthering her passion for sustainable agriculture.
During the visit, Roseline showcased her innovative hydroponic systems and a diverse array of fresh produce, including Spring onions, red cabbage, English cucumbers and tomatoes which she successfully supplies the Freshlinq Market, Ocean Basket, Encore Restaurant and Harvest Fresh.
As part of her vision for the future, Mapuranga shared her plans to establish a Training Centre for climate smart agriculture aimed at equipping local farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in modern farming. This initiative will focus on sustainable practices, hydroponics, and the importance of food security in the region.
Mapuranga also addressed the challenges faced in the field, including access to resources and climate variability. “While there are obstacles, I believe that with the right training and support, we can overcome these challenges and create a thriving agricultural community,” she added.
The visit concluded with discussions on potential collaborations between Mapuranga’s farm and MSU and the Midvaal Local Municipality highlighting the importance of knowledge exchange and support in developing sustainable agricultural practices and looking into a proposal to send other emerging farmers to do the same program at Michigan State University.
Roseline Mapuranga is a testament to the power of education and determination in transforming lives and communities through innovative farming techniques. Her story is not just about personal success but about empowering others to embrace the future of agriculture.

The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism and Peace”, Midvaal celebrated the month and day by putting the spotlight on local establishments that protect natural resources and promote eco-friendly travel, as a contribution to tourism and peace. In the wake of global disruptions, such as the pandemic, tourism can be a powerful tool for bringing back peace and resilience by promoting role players to adapt and innovate, that way communities can leverage tourism to recover economically and socially, creating a sense of hope and unity.

Midvaal continues to position itself as a destination of choice for people to live, work, and play. Tourism is emphasized as a crucial driver of economic growth, contributing significantly to job creation and income generation. Midvaal actively supports local businesses and promotes cultural heritage, allowing locals and travelers to experience diverse traditions and lifestyles.

The Department of Community Services in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, hosted the games at the Meyerton Sports and Conference Centre, Sicelo multi-purpose Centre and Dr Malan Secondary School in Meyerton.
The Games is an exclusive youth sports event represented by participants from Gauteng municipalities under the age of 17 years old.

The event was packed with empowering moments, including a self-defence demonstration by Firefighter Morné Mommsen and Sensei Lezane, an insightful talk by Constable Mpumi Zazini, and performances by @caitierock . ????????
We also honoured Midvaal’s Most Influential Women with special awards in the following categories:
