Midvaal Local Municipality has completed the extension of the Kookrus Cemetery to increase burial space and to ensure that residents can lay their loved ones to rest with dignity.

The project commenced in 2022 and was undertaken at a cost of more than R7 million.

It included feasibility studies and the appointment of a professional consultant to undertake the necessary designs for the cemetery extension.

The extension includes the construction of an ablution block, service roads and landscaping.

A dedicated caretaker will also be appointed to ensure that the cemetery is kept clean and well maintained.

The Municipality’s existing active cemeteries, Meyerton and Kookrus, are approximately 90% full.

The extension of the Kookrus Cemetery forms part of the Municipality’s planning to address the growing need for burial space and ensure that adequate capacity is available for the community.

Based on the current mortality rate, the extended cemetery is expected to provide burial capacity for at least the next six years.

As a Municipality, we recognise the importance of cemeteries to families and communities when laying their loved ones to rest.

This is why we are proactively investing in ensuring adequate burial space and the ongoing maintenance of these facilities.

Midvaal Local Municipality’s War on Potholes campaign continues to gain momentum, with road maintenance teams repairing more than 2,900 potholes across the Municipality.

Our Roads teams identified more than 2,888 potholes and repaired over 2,432.

The Team within the Water Section also played an instrumental role in accelerating the campaign, identifying a further 604 potholes and repairing 524.

This brought the total number of potholes repaired during the month to at least 2,900.

The Municipality’s Road maintenance programme extends beyond pothole repairs; we have adopted a holistic approach to restore and maintain the overall condition of Midvaal’s road network and improve the appearance of all our areas.

The Municipality’s Stormwater Maintenance Teams cleared debris and obstructions from more than 423 metres of stormwater infrastructure.

This work is important in maintaining the effective flow of stormwater and protecting roads and surrounding areas from water-related damage.

Gravel road maintenance has also continued, with teams regravelling at least 14 kilometres of gravel roads during the month.

The teams graded and shaped roads, placed appropriate road-building materials such as G5 where required, and continued opening and maintaining mitre drains to improve drainage and road conditions.

The campaign also includes tree cutting, weed control and the clearing of illegal dumping sites.

These interventions not only contribute to safer and more accessible roads but also help keep Midvaal’s towns and communities clean and well maintained.

Road marking teams are also contributing to the programme by repainting faded stop signs, repainting rusted road-sign poles and refreshing markings on speed humps to improve visibility and road safety.

The War on Potholes will continue, with teams working across Midvaal to address road maintenance backlogs, keep our roads in good condition and ensure that our residents can travel safely on a reliable road network.

Midvaal Local Municipality today unveiled the newly completed Savanna City Substation, aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution.

The project was completed on time and within budget at a total cost of R49 million.

The project forms part of the municipality’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to ensure that communities have access to reliable and sustainable electricity services.

The construction of the substation included the development of key electrical infrastructure in accordance with Eskom standards and specifications.

This included the construction of the substation terrace and earthmat, plinths and foundations.

The project also included the construction of an 88 kV control room, equipped with the required ventilation and warning signage, as well as 11 kV switching rooms, a control room and a load control room.

An oil holding dam was also constructed for the 88/11 kV transformers, while yard stone was spread across the substation yard in accordance with the required specifications.

The project also contributed to the local economy, creating at least 25 jobs during the construction phase.

A total of 10 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were also subcontracted to participate in the project.

The Savanna City Substation is an important addition to Midvaal’s electricity infrastructure and will increase capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area.

Midvaal continues to make these investments to unlock further developments and to ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.

Midvaal Local Municipality continues to make significant progress through its ongoing War on Potholes campaign, actively working to build safer and more reliable roads for residents across the municipality.

During the month of July, municipal road maintenance teams repaired 2,597 potholes, maintaining an impressive weekly pothole closure rate of between 89% and 93% of all identified potholes.

The Municipality’s Water Section also played a critical supporting role by repairing all identified water-related potholes, with a total of 430 potholes successfully repaired.

Our grading teams continued to improve the Municipality’s gravel road network by regravelling more than 19 kilometres of roads.

In addition, road marking teams continued enhancing road safety and the overall appearance of Midvaal’s streets through the repainting of stop signs, pedestrian crossings and speed humps.

Following extensive road failures that compromised sections of Boundary Road, rehabilitation works were undertaken to restore the structural integrity of the affected area.

The project is now substantially complete, with only the painting of the centre line remaining before completion.

Another major infrastructure project was the successful completion of rehabilitation works on Corrie Pypers Road in Golf Park.

During assessments, our team found the road to be highly saturated and requiring remedial work.

The rehabilitation has now been completed, and the road has been reopened to traffic.

Midvaal will continue to invest in the maintenance and upgrades of its road infrastructure to ensure a safe and reliable road network.

Midvaal Local Municipality urges residents and prospective property buyers to exercise extreme caution regarding the advertising and sale of so-called “premium serviced stands” at the Honey Hills Estate Living Development situated along the R82.

This notice follows several enquiries received from members of the public seeking clarification on the status and legality of the development.

The Municipality wishes to make it clear that no municipal approvals have been granted for township establishment or any development authorising the sale of residential stands within the Honey Hills Estate Living Development. Consequently, the stands currently being marketed and offered for sale have not received the necessary municipal approvals and authorisations required by law.

Residents and potential purchasers are strongly advised not to purchase, reserve, make any payments towards, or enter into agreements relating to these stands until all statutory, regulatory and municipal approval processes have been completed and officially confirmed by Midvaal Local Municipality.

Purchasing property within an unapproved development may expose buyers to significant risks, including:

Financial loss and investment uncertainty

Delays in accessing municipal services

Challenges relating to land use rights and zoning compliance

Potential legal and regulatory implications

The Municipality encourages all prospective buyers to conduct thorough due diligence and to verify the approval status of any proposed development directly with the Development & Planning Department before committing to any property transaction.
