Midvaal together with Emfuleni Municipality constitute the major centre of economic activity in the southern parts of Gauteng Province.

The spatial structure of the Midvaal municipal area is predominantly that of a rural area, with extensive farming.

The name Midvaal is derived from its geographical location which is halfway between Johannesburg/East Rand and the Vaal/Vereeniging area.
