The Midvaal Local Municipality marks International Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated globally on July 18, through various initiatives aimed at uplifting and supporting various communities.

On July 18, Executive Mayor Cllr Bongani Baloyi, along with members of the Mayoral Committees, together with several other partners dedicated their 67 minutes painting at Doulos Care Centre and Sokasambe Home Care in Meyerton.

The team dedicated their 67 minutes for Mandela Day by spending time painting, planting vegetable gardens, grass cutting, donating non-perishable food, sanitary towels, teaching about infection control and hygiene at the housing nearly 40 orphaned and abandoned children, many of whom are living with HIV/AIDS.

The Executive Mayor joined in partnership with Heineken-Sedibeng Breweries the refurbishing and renovation of the Victim Friendly Centre at De Deur Police Station. This centre, is the first point of contact for many residents who seek help when opening cases of domestic abuse and violence.

In handing over the revamped facility to the Acting Station Commander, Ms. Makoko, he emphasised the importance of private-public partnerships in fighting crime and social cohesion.

“As we commemorate Nelson Mandela’s legacy, we are dedicating what we can with what we have for those who need it most, it’s about finding solutions to the problems and challenges we encounter daily in our communities and providing solutions, let’s make everyday a Mandela Day “ the Executive Mayor said.
