The Midvaal Local Municipality would like to condemn, in the strongest terms, the ongoing criminal activities which have led to the continuous closure of the R59.
At least seven trucks have been hijacked and/or set alight and 80 vehicles stoned since the start of the year, by a number of perpetrators.
Midvaal is appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist the South African Police Service with leads that could ensure the arrest and conviction of those responsible for these criminal acts.
The municipality is offering a reward of R10 000 to anyone with valuable information that can lead to a successful conviction.
We have opened a case of malicious damage to property and public violence at the Meyerton Police Station, which is currently being investigated. We continue to urge motorists who have had their vehicles damaged or destroyed to report their cases to the police.
The SAPS will continue to monitor the area and the highway will remain closed until debris from the burnt truck has been removed.
We apologise for any inconveniences caused.
